The speaking community
Yɛn Bɔ Nkɔmmɔ
“Let’s have a conversation.”
A weekly speaking group for people who don’t want their Twi going quiet between courses. Small groups, real conversations, every single week.
Join YBKWhat it actually is
Not a course. A place to keep speaking.
This is the part people get wrong, so let’s be direct about it.
YBK is
- A weekly hour of live conversation with a Ghanaian tutor
- A group of five or fewer, matched to your confidence level
- A WhatsApp group running between calls
- Twi only, with as little English as we can manage
- Somewhere your speaking stays warm
YBK isn’t
- A structured course with a curriculum
- A replacement for New Year, New Twi
- Somewhere to learn Twi from scratch
- Graded, examined or certificated
- A substitute for Ka Kakra or the Refinement Lab
How it works
What a week in YBK looks like.
There’s no timetable to keep up with. Just a rhythm that keeps Twi in your week instead of on your list.
Through the week
Voice notes
Your group chat keeps going. A question, a phrase you heard, a voice note you record on the way to work. Small and constant beats big and rare.
Once a week
The live call
One hour on Zoom with your tutor and up to four other people. Twi only, as far as possible. Everyone speaks, because in a group this size there’s nowhere to hide.
Ongoing
The challenge
A speaking task to take away and try. Something you can actually use, on someone who actually speaks Twi.
The groups
You’ll be placed where you can actually speak.
Three groups, matched by confidence rather than by how long you’ve been learning. Being the quietest person in a room that’s too advanced helps nobody.
Start here
YBK Mmiɛnsa
Where confidence begins. For people who’ve got the words but haven’t used them out loud much yet.
Building
YBK Mmienu
Where conversation grows. You can hold your side of it and you’re ready to stretch further.
Flowing
YBK Baako
Where flow becomes natural. Less translating, more talking, closer to the speed of a real conversation.
You can move up as your confidence grows. Most people do.
Who it’s for
For anyone whose Twi goes quiet.
The hardest part of learning a language isn’t the learning. It’s the months afterwards when nobody makes you speak it.
- Graduates who’ve finished a course and don’t want to lose it
- People between cohorts waiting for the next intake
- Anyone who understands Twi at home but never speaks it
- Learners who just want people to practise with, regularly
Questions
Before you join.
Isn’t YBK already part of my course?
Yes. If you’re on New Year, New Twi, Ka Kakra or the Refinement Lab, your YBK group is included. This membership is for people who want YBK on its own, or who want to carry on once their experience ends.
Can I join if I’ve never taken a Teach Me Twi course?
You can, as long as you already have some Twi to work with. YBK is speaking practice, not teaching. If you’re a complete beginner you’ll get far more from New Year, New Twi first.
How do I know which group I’ll be in?
We place you by confidence rather than by how long you’ve been learning, and we’ll move you if the fit isn’t right. Nobody gets dropped into a group where they’ll sit silent for an hour.
Do I have to speak Twi the whole time?
That’s the aim, with as little English as possible. Nobody expects perfection, and English creeps in. But the whole reason YBK works is that you’re pushed into Twi rather than allowed to drift back.
What if I miss a week?
Nothing happens. It’s a community, not a course, so there’s no syllabus to fall behind on. Your group chat carries on and you pick up the next call.
Can I cancel?
Yes, any time. Your membership runs to the end of the month you cancel in, so you keep your calls and your group until then. Nothing is lost if you come back later either. Plenty of people step away for a bit and rejoin when life settles.
Do I get a certificate?
No. YBK isn’t a course and there’s nothing to complete. If you want a structured experience with a certificate at the end, look at New Year, New Twi or Ka Kakra.
