"You Lose Nothing. You Gain So Much."

A student story from Faustina, Canada

My name's Faustina and I'm from Canada. My Ghanaian background is something I value and continue to connect with through culture and language.

Although I was born outside of Ghana, I've always had a strong interest in learning to understand and speak Twi. I already had a foundation in the language, so I wasn't starting from zero. As I grew older, I became more intentional and consistent with learning, driven by my love for my culture and my desire to feel closer to my roots.

The highlight for me

The roleplays. Each week we'd step into roles. Aunties, uncles, sellers, buyers, which made the experience both fun and practical. It really showed me how enjoyable learning a language can be!

What Teach Me Twi taught me

Teach Me Twi helped me realise that sounding silly doesn't matter. What matters is putting in the effort to speak and not being discouraged by trying to be perfect. The tutors genuinely encourage that mindset, and it's been amazing to be part of a community united by one goal, learning through constant practice.

What I'd say to anyone thinking about it

Go for it. You lose nothing and gain so much. Learning the language opens the door to deeper cultural connection and understanding.

What I'd say to others thinking about it

Just go for it. If you've been thinking about it, this is your sign.

Be patient with yourself and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Practise whenever you can, even small things like listening or speaking with friends. It all adds up, and you'll see progress.
